DIY: Inspiration J.Crew's Crystal Stripe-Link Bracelet

Recently, while perusing the J.Crew website, I came across this Crystal Stripe-Link Bracelet for $42.00. I think that is a good price point, but during a recent trip to Lowe's (where I met a new friend), I saw plastic chain very similar to this picture.The chain was selling for $0.76 a foot. The following steps will help you produce a bracelet similar to the following J.crew bracelet.


J. Crew's Crystal Stripe-Link Bracelet

Materials needed: white and black plastic chain available by the foot for $0.76 cents at Lowe's.

These are all available at your local craft store. You will also need E-6000 craft glue, sharp scissors, pliers, and a paper plate. My supplies from the craft store were 40% off, so the cost of the bracelet was a total of $5.50.

First: Measure your wrist for the amount of links you will need. I cut off 3 white links and 2 black links. The black link was the only one that was used with a cut. I intentionally cut it in the middle of the link, because it will later be covered.

Second: Hook the black and white chain together using this cut black link. Then use the E-6000 craft glue to adhere the cut in the black link.

Third: Clamp the opening together until the glue adheres.

Fourth: I peeled 7 small rhinestones off. I measure how many I needed before peeling. Apply glue to the back before applying. You will need to connect the rhinestone sticker in the inside of the link, this is so it cannot be seen.

Fifth: This is what one link should look like after applying the rhinstone stickers to each side.

Sixth: I left the black link that was cut to do last. The rhinestone sticker will cover up the cut that has been made.

Seventh: Let it dry for at least 2 hours.

Eighth: Using the pliers pull apart the round jump ring.

Ninth: On each end, apply the jewerly piece to the jump ring. Then close the jump ring with the pliers.

Looks pretty close to the inspiration!

I love the color blocking in this bracelet. This bracelet will be getting much wear !

****I have a little story to share about my new friend I met at Lowe's. This friend I met on a previous trip to Lowe's, when I was looking for another type of chain. On my first trip, when I was questioned the Lowe's clerk about a chain and how heavy that would be on my neck. He responded, " Look lady, this is a hardware store, why don't you go to the crafty store across the street?" On the second trip to purchase plastic chain for this DIY, this same gentleman was there. I asked if he remembered me, and he said he did and asked why I was here this time. I told him I wanted some plastic chain. He asked how much and I said, "One foot, so I can make two bracelets." He entertained me by wrapping it around my wrist. As I was leaving, he asked, "What do you do with this stuff anyway?" I told him about my blog and what I did. He actually asked for the name and said he was going to check it out. He just made me smile, because I know I was asking things out of his element, but he was still so nice and helpful. I am sure I will see this new friend again on many trips to Lowe's.

Ode to the Maxi Dress

Hope everyone had a great weekend! Thank you for all my birthday wishes. I am so grateful to have the family and friends that I have in my life. As I was out this weekend shopping, I came across a few maxi dresses that caught my eye. The maxi dress looks great on every body type. The maxi is my go-to outfit in the summer. I will pair it with some sandals and jewelry, then I am ready to go. Even though it is February and it is still to chilly to wear one of these dresses without a sweater, it is a perfect time to buy them. Maxi dresses are everywhere and to ensure you get the "one" you fancy I would suggest to purchase one now. Below are some a of my favorite maxis.

Photo Collage Walls

When it comes to home decor, I prefer a home with lots of photos that can tell the tale of the family. I love things that ascent the importance of family. The following pictures are of three excellent rooms with walls displaying photo collages. Personally, I tend to lean more towards black and white photos, as seen in the last two pictures, but I love the use of color in this first photo and the layout of the collage.

This brings me to my own black and white collage photo wall shown below. It's located in my kitchen next to our kitchen table. I find that guests enjoy looking at them and they often become a conversation starter at parties. I replace photos throughout the year with the latest and keep the history intact within the frame. I hope my kids enjoy them when they get older. The trick is truly choosing the best pictures from our digital images on our computer. Very different as a kid, they were in an album that I could look at daily. This kinda makes it feel similar to an album on the wall. All of the photos in my collage have are of great importance to me, like my daughter's first birthday, her kindergarten graduation, and my son's first belly laugh. I did this wall on one of my spring vacations. I remember my husband was a little afraid of me just hammering away, but he loved the outcome. I would suggest you layout your photos and get the perfect collage before placing on the wall.

I also love monogram letters. Recently I added the large letter T, but I also have the small initials on individuals pictures.

This is one of my favs. My uncle took this one of me and my daughter on her birthday. The essence of this one is that I had no idea he was taking it. I was thinking when I looked at her "can't believe I'm responsible for this tiny thing, I love you." It is such a 'raw' photo. I love being able to look at it everyday an remember that moment.


Another fav on the wall - on the left is me when I caught my first fish and on the right is my daughter when she caught hers. Last, this photo on my wall is my son's first belly laugh, how can you not smile just looking at that face! We all live for those moments.

Personal Style- Cropped Pants

During one of my birthday shopping excursions, I came across these pink cropped pants from H&M. I loved everything about these pants - the style is very flattering, the color, and the price was a $34.95. I will be getting a lot of use out of these. This outfit would be one that I would wear to work with flats, and then in the evening with heels. I was watching the Today Show this morning and they were doing a piece on neon and bright colors. They were saying that when people wear bright colors, it tends to put them in a happy mood. I have said that before, and feel that that is so true. Have you purchased something recently that was a bright color?

DIY- Fur Coat into a Vest

I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend. This is the start of my birthday week. My actual birthday is Thursday the 23rd, but your birthday only comes once a year and I would like to celebrate it more than just one day. To start it off, my giveaway ended last night and the winner is:

Porcelain complexion, congrats and if you can email me your address, I will send it out quickly. Next, I was reading a post from Grace at Stripes and Sequins and she showed this photo of Olivia Palermo in this fur vest.

I loved this vest. I have told you in past posts that my mom has found many fur coats for me at the thrift store for unbelievable prices. The photo below shows one of her finds.

Great coat, but it looks like it could swallow me because it is so big. I sometimes use the fur on projects, but this coat has great character. So, when I saw the Olivia Palermo vest, it gave me the idea to take this coat and make it into a vest. The outcome is fabulous. Follow these steps to make your fur vest.

First: Using a seam ripper seperate the lining of the arms before you cut.

Second: Cut the arms off the coat. You will resew the lining to the fur later with the sewing machine. You can also hand sew it if you can not use a sewing machine.

Third: Using the seam ripper seperate the edge of the front of the coat. Then try the coat on to decide the amount that needs to be cut off.


Fourth: Sew the lining of the coat to the fur sides.

Can you even believe it?? I love it and will get so much use out of this vest. I also even used the sleeves for projects to be seen at a later date. I would love to hear what you think. Did you do anything fun over the weekend?

DIY Inspirations

Happy Friday! Here are DIY inspirations for if you are feeling creative this weekend.


First, you could make this chalkboard frame. I got this frame at a garage sale for $3.00. I painted it white and took it to my local hardware store to get plywood cut for the frame for $5.00. I decide to make one of these after I went to a local store and they were selling similar ones for $89.00. It is a great accent in my laundry room.

Second, is this end table that has pages of a book Mod Podged to the top of the table only. This is one of my favorite tables because it has such character.


Third, make a center piece for spring. This was my centerpiece for Valentine's Day. I am going to be making mine this weekend, so we will see what I am going to come up with. All of these DIYs are simple and fun. Have a great Friday! Do you have any plans for the long holiday weekend?

Wishing for warmer days

The past week has been terrribly cold here and we even have had 3 days of snow. But it has been a mild winter and on one of those recent sunny days I was able to get this picture. Even though I do not like to wish time away, I can't wait for warmer days. This is a very busy week for me. I have to stay late at work for two nights this week, I volunteered to do an outside project for work (not sure why), Valentine's parties, cards, gifts, my child's nightly homework and my daughter has a project due Friday. Last, but not least I have to faciliate this meeting on Friday. So, I decided to post my personal style on Wednesday and on Friday I will post some DIY ideas you may like to try over the long holiday weekend.

This outfit below is a great reflection of my personal style. I love to throw on a dress with a scarf and some boots. Often, people will say, "You are dressed up." I feel that an outfit like this is much easier to put together, than pants and a blouse. With this dress I have one piece and that's all. This simple black dress is made more interesting with the bird print. If you had to pick an outfit to reflect your personal style, what would it be? Would it be a dress, jeans and t-shirt, blazer and pants, etc.?

Tibi -Spring 2012 Collection- Look for Less

I love this Spring 2012 RTW collection by Tibi. This collection, by Amy Smilovic, uses great silk fabrics and variety of colors. She incorporates bermuda shorts, silk shorts, blazers, and flowing wide leg pants. I think what I love the most is that these outfits could be worn day or night. They look very comfortable, and very well put together. I would love to own pieces from this collection, but if you would like this same type of look I have put together two looks for less based on this simple and classic style by Tibi. To Thrift or not to Thrift.....

This is my last thrifted outfit for the week. I look a little serious because it was rather cold that day. My shirt is Ann Taylor Loft- thrifted for $2.00 and my shoes are Steve Madden loafers, also thirfted. I wanted to devote these last two weeks to thrifting, because I enjoy it so much. Also, I wanted to share reasons to thrift, if you currently don't. I have a thrifting story to tell. I admired a shirt similar to this one ( in the photo) that my friend had purchased from J.Crew. I held off on buying it, but I found one similar at the thrift store. So, even current styles and trends can be found at the thrift store because fashion trends always seem to come back around. I will occasionally do posts on things I have thirfted. But my blog will not be devoted to only thrifting, because when I look at someone's personal style and I really like a thirfted item, I am bummed when I know I can't purchase it. So, I will try to showcase items that are currently available. Have a great weekend, and I would love to hear if you thrifted anything lately!

DIY- VIntage Suitcase Dog Bed

In continuing with my theme of thrifting, I created this unusual DIY, but it's one that my dog loves. My awesome friend gave me this suitcase that she bought from the thrift store. She purchased this for a $1. 00. With this suitcase and some other materials I was able to create a unique dog bed for my sweet girl, Elle. This bed can be made for any size dog, you just need to find a larger suitcase.

Materials need for this project are a suitcase, hammer, pliers, screw driver, fur and cotton material, poly fill, tape measure, hot glue gun and sticks, scissors, sewing machine, thread, acrylic paint, 4 wooden spheres for feet, pencil and a foam brush.

Step1: Separate the top and the bottom parts of the suitcase with a screw driver and hammer. I also used my pliers to pull out any extra screws.

This is what my suitcase looked like when separated. I then wiped down the inside and let it dry overnight. I made two beds from one suitcase. The bottom was used for the bed for my dog and the top part of the suitcase for a bed for my friend's dog.

Step 2: Next, you will work on the bed/pillow. I bought enough material for the length and the width of my suitcase. My material was $4.00. I cut it into two equal pieces. Then, I faced the material pieces together, with the material I want to see inside. (If you do not want to complete this step due to the sewing, you could purchase a pillow, instead)

Step 3: You will need to sew three sides completely. The fourth side you will leave an opening to fill.

Step 4: Fill with the poly fill. This was only $2.99. I had enough to make two beds.

Step 5: Fold over the edges and sew opening closed.

Step 6: Cut you fur material while leaving enough so that it can hang over the sides of your suitcase. This was material from a vintage fur coat, also thrifted. Fur material also can be found at your local craft store.

Step 7: Glue the fur into the grove of the suitcase. I used fur also to cover the back metal screws that were holding the suitcase together.

Step 8: Paint the sphere shape legs for the bottom of the suitcase. These can be found at your local craft store in the wood aisle. They come in packs of four and are $2.00. I painted mine black with white polka - dots.

Step 9: Using a tape measure, measure from the edge and make four marks to place the feet. You will need to hot glue them into position.

Finished product turned out great. I love this bed, because it combines my love of vintage with a flare of modern. It seems like there are quite a few steps, but this really can be done in less than one hour if all the materials are ready. I would love to hear what you think and don't forget about my giveaway.

2nd Week of Thrifting

This post will begin my second week of recent thrifted finds.The outfit below has many great items that were thrifted. My Franco Sarto shoes were consigned and are a great neutral color. My favorite characteristic of these shoes are the two zippers on each side. My lace shirt, which was purchased from a local thrift store, is unique because of the mesh material and the neckline. Last but not least, these Gap silk cropped pants.(Love ,Love) These were not thirfted, but they were half the price of the shoes. So, I definitely consider them a thrifty find.

Fur Cape Find

I hope everyone is as excited as I am for the weekend! It has been a long week (yet again). In the photos below are three more of my thrift store finds. This fur cape is fabulous. My favorite characteristics of the cape are the two pockets in the front and its asymmetrical design. I would have purchased it for a lot more than my mother paid for it. (That's how you know it's a good purchase! Good looking out mom!). The price was $2.99- that's why I love Goodwill and their set prices. Another piece from the thrift store is the long sleeve lace shirt. This shirt is a great staple piece and I don't see it going out of style. I wear it with many things. The last item is my Steve Madden blue suede pumps from Plato's Closet. I love this cobalt blue color (more like obsessed). I have been looking for a pair of colored suede pumps and for $14.00, these had to be mine. These pumps will get a lot of use. In many blogs I have been reading, everyone seems to be on a spending freeze. When you thrift store shop you can still find current trends without killing your wallet. Then you can still save for your spring "must have" items. Have a great weekend. I would love to hear if you have thrifted anything lately.

DIY- Recovering a footstool or ottoman

This is another one of my great thrift store finds. This footstool (or small ottoman) was $3.99!!! The bottom of the stool was not scratched at all, but the fabric had rips and really wasn't my style. I am not an expert at reupholstering furniture, but I love my staple gun. It is a little crazy how many times I have changed my kitchen seats. This find was too good to pass up and I could see it had great potential. I know I haven't done a DIY on a household item, but when the summer comes, I will be doing more of these. If you have a piece of furniture, and you always wanted to change the material, give this a try. I have a great fabric website called Fabric Guru. They have a wide selection and are very reasonably priced.

My finished product, and I love it.


Materials needed for this project are material, staple gun, staples, scissors, tape measure, and edging. Make sure that you measure the length and width before purchasing your material. My material was $15.00 and my edging was $2.55. My total cost was about $20.00.

Step 1: Cut off the existing material.

Step 2: Spread out your material and then cut accordingly.

Step 3: Fold the material under. Then pull the material tight before stapling. Follow this same technique around the stool.

Step 4: Leave the corners to do last. You will need to trim the excess material off the corners.

Step 5: Gather the material and pull tight. You will have some gathering, but that will be expected. Complete each of the four corners.

This is a finished corner. The decorative trim will cover your staples and any excess below the staple.

I love this stool in my living room. I once saw a post about combining your style with your significant other's. For me, I add pieces that are important to my husband. For example, those masks in the picture are from our trip to Mexico. He went to Chichen Itza: Mayan ruins and these mean a lot to him. Also, on the side table are books that he is interested in. I find these are great ways to incorporate both our styles and interests. I would love to hear what you think.

The First Week of Thrifting

I will be devoting the next two weeks on my blog to thrift store finds. I have friends that do not enjoy thrift store shopping for many different reasons. I love the challenge of finding a bargain or a unique item that no one else may own. There are levels of thrifting. You have consignment shops, thift stores, Goodwill and Salvation Army, and vintage shops. In Columbus, we have a chain of consignment shops called Clothes Mentor and Plato's Closet. Whenever I clean out my closet, I take my items to these stores. They accept everything from accessories to clothes to shoes. These stores are quick to go through your items and I think they give you a fair price. I then donate the items they don't accept to the Goodwill. The Steve Madden shoes in the picture below are from Plato's closet. The coat below is also from the Ohio Thrift Store for a great price of $25.00. This particular store donates all proceeds to the fight against cancer. A fantastic purchase, for an even better cause. This has been one of my favorite finds, and even after dry cleaning it was less than $40.00. What are some thrift stores you go to?

Continuing Bright Colors

I love this pop of color. I snagged this bracelet at J.Crew a couple of weeks ago. I love wearing a lot of bracelets. Recently, I read wearing many bracelets can balance wearing a big watch. It was a little chilly that day, so excuse the goosebumps.

DIY-Neon Rhinestone Necklace

This week my posts are dedicated to bright colors. I wanted to have a neon rhinestone necklace, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money because it is a trendy piece.This picture makes the necklace look darker, but it is a great neon yellow. The cool thing about DIYs are you can make items you like for a very reasonable price.

Materials needed for this project are yellow fluorescent spray paint, clear gloss spray paint, rhinestone necklace, remnants of an old necklace, lightweight jewelry wire, wire cutters, pliers, and newspaper.

I purchased this necklace at the thrift store last week as a set for $6.99. I have great plans for the bracelet and earrings.(You may see them in a future post.) You might have a rhinestone necklace in your own jewelry box you can use.

Step 1 : Lay your necklace face up and spray the fluorescent paint. I sprayed two light coats, you don't want it to be caked on. After this dries, spray with the clear gloss spray paint. This coats the necklace and adds a shine to the rhinestones. I found the fluorescent paint dried in dull finish.

Step 2: The neon necklace by itself is very simple with a little funkiness. I wanted to add more detail, so I went digging in my jewelry box. I found this necklace, which I had never worn. On the necklace, I removed the ribbon that was attached. Then, it was ready to be assembled.

(Sorry about the shadow) Step 3 : I used the jewelry wire and tied the two necklaces together. I counted down 12 rhinestones from the hook, because I wanted to to have a longer look. Then, once you pulled the wire tightly with the pliers, cut with your wire cutters. Your necklace is finished and ready to be worn. I wore mine to work the other day and received many compliments. I see myself wearing it a lot in the summer with a tank and a maxi skirt. I would love to hear what you think. Happy Wednesday!!!

Neon is definitely a trend for this spring. I love it, but I don't want to be one big bright neon outfit. I think the best way to incorporate neon into your wardrobe is in small amounts. In my wardrobe, I will be adding many neon accessories. I purchased a neon belt and earrings from ASOS. I can't wait to wear them. Do you think you will wear neon? 1. I always give everything I do 100% effort, a trait that I try to instill with my children.

DIY- Polka Dot Bangles

I have posted these Marc by Marc Jacobs 'Hot Dot' Wide Bangles before. I love these, but they are $68.00 a piece, so DIY time.

I found two plastic bracelets at the thrift store for a $1.00. They had the characteristics I was looking for, same size, and thickness. Materials needed for this project are two wide bangle bracelets, spray paint, paper, a nickel, newspaper, and two paint pens - cobalt blue and black. *I bought spray paint that adheres to plastic in black, cream, and clear.

Spray paint each bracelet.

**You could buy plastic bangles that are already cream and black, if you don't want to invest in spray paint.

I made a stencil by tracing a nickel. I tried different sized coins, until I found the desired size.

Trace the stencil onto the bracelet with a pencil. Make sure to have a pattern set in place before you start tracing.

Use the paint pens to trace the circles and fill in. The last step is optional, I sprayed the bracelets with a clear spray paint as an extra coating to deter chipping and fading.

Final outcome satisfies my taste for a polka dot bracelet.

The Irony

This dress was a recent thrift store purchase of mine for $2.00. I thought this dress had potential and absolutely loved this print. My intentions were to raise the hem, alter the top, and pair it with a belt. Now, I just learned to sew, so I think sometimes my ideas overextend my ability. Well, I altered the top beautifully and then began on the hem. That did not turn out as well. I kept fixing it and cutting more off, fixing it and cutting more off (you have the idea). Well, after all alterations were complete, this dress has been turned into a fabulous shirt. The irony is, I love the outcome even though it wasn't what I had envisioned.

Today is the first official snow day here. While the snow is beautiful to look at, I long for warmer days. I am grateful this past week was sunny and I was able to get out and take some pictures. DIY-Lace Applique Pumps- Inspiration Marc Jacobs lace-detailed pumps

I loved these pumps by Marc Jacobs in my Lucky Magazine and this gave me the inspiration for the following DIY lace appliqué high heels. Marc Jacobs also makes them in flats, which would be fabulous. This project is easy and inexpensive and the outcome is great!!

Materials needed are plain pumps, scalloped lace (look in the bridal section at the craft store), foam brush, Mod Podge glue, E6000 craft glue, stick pins, and scissors. You can find pumps cheap at the thrift store or maybe in your closet.

Step 1: Make sure the surface is clean on your shoe and attach tape to the end of the lace. Then attach the lace to the seam at the back off the shoe. You can use the bottom of the shoe as a guide for placement of the lace. You will need to use a stick pin to hold the lace in place before you can cut the lace.

Step 2: Using your foam brush, apply the Mod Podge glue along the side of the pump. Make sure not to apply too much glue.

Step 3: Place the lace over the glue and press down. Next, apply glue to the edge of the lace at the bottom to help hold into place. You will trim this edge later. Then, apply Mod Podge glue lightly over the top surface of the lace. My lace has little rhinestones, so I made sure not to put too much glue over these, so they would not dull.

Step 4: Repeat the steps above to the other side of the shoe.

Step 5: I placed the curved lace over the front part of the shoe to follow the curve of the pump. Then, apply with Mod Podge and use the stick pins to hold in place. After the glue has dried, trim the edges of the lace.

Step 6: You will then complete the other pump. They will need to dry, but we still have a few steps.

To make sure the pieces are secure, I used the E6000 craft glue to attach the edge pieces.

You will use the E6000 craft glue on the edges by the sole to secure the lace.

Step 6: I love how the lace overlays the top of the pump, but I wanted it to have a stiffness. I applied Mod Podge to these parts of the lace. I applied just enough glue to make these pieces curve.

DIY: Embellished Metallic Bracelet

I generally wear silver jewelry, the more the better. On occasions, I do like wearing gold. This metallic pyramid studded bracelet is a great combination of gold and silver. I adore this metallic patina look and have noticed this look on many accessories this winter. I love how this bracelet turned out.

Materials needed for this project are a wood bracelet, gold spray paint, silver acrylic paint, pyramid studs, E6000 craft glue, foam brush, sandpaper, paper plate, scissors, and newspaper . I found my bracelet at a Plato's closet for a $1.00. I have seen many at the thrift store and you may have one lying around in your jewelry box. The pyramid studs were in the scrapbooking aisle at the craft store.

Step 1. Make sure to sand your bracelet. This will remove any chipping paint and smooth out your surface .

Step 2. Lay your bracelet on newspaper and spray it with the gold spray paint. You may need more than one coat. It will need to dry thoroughly before completing the next step.

Step 3. Paint the bracelet with the silver acrylic paint using the foam brush. You will need to complete the next step quickly after painting the bracelet.

Step 4. Ball up the paper towel and lightly pat the bracelet. You want to make sure the gold can be seen while you are completing this process.

Step 5. The next step can be completed after the bracelet is completely dry. My pyramid studs were actually brads, so I had to remove the back with scissors. The design I decided to create was a large stud, medium stud, and repeat. Apply the E6000 craft glue to the back of the stud and apply to the bracelet. You will need to hold each stud when applying for about 10 seconds or until the adhesive bonds the stud to the bracelet. After the pyramid studs have dried, your new bracelet is ready to wear. Getting Ready for 2012

I wish everyone a Happy New Year. I have had the best time writing my blog and can't wait to see what 2012 has in store. One project that I have been working on over the holidays is creating a space for all my projects. My mother and brother Kevin came over 2 weekends ago and helped me organize an area in the basement for my studio. Well, after a week I have added a little color and feel inspired to create. I wanted to share my photos of my creative space and show that you can make a space with items you already own. See you in 2012.

The material used on my table were from a duvet I owned. I used a staple gun to secure it to the edge of the table. The frames and the lime green paint were from my basement. I used some vintage necklaces in the large frame. The curtain over the window is made from two pillow shams.

This screen divider helps separate my studio space from the rest of the basement. This screen my mom gave me and was a pale green. The pink and white material is from a curtain that I bought for $15.00. I was able to use this material in a variety of places. I also used chalkboard paint on this screen. The trunk I already owned and is great for storage.

Love the chalkboard paint.

For storage I used those glass vases that take up cabinet space. I used them for my thread and zippers. I already owned the paper flowers and vase.

This fabulous zebra chair is from the thrift store for $7.99. (Wow!) The shag pink rug is from Walmart for $20.00. I spend a total of $42.00 on my space. This space is priceless because it is mine to be creative and not have to worry about picking up a mess ever time I start a new project.

DIY- Making a Wine Glass Hostess Gift

A New Year's Eve gathering may be in your holiday season future. Often people bring a bottle of wine as a hostess gift. An easy gift is bringing some chalkboard painted wine glasses, for those bottles of wine. This project is easy and personal. I have taken these glasses to the holiday gatherings I attended. I have given each hostess a set of 4 glasses. I loved them so much that I made myself a set.

Items need for the project are wine glasses(I got mine for a $1.00 each at the dollar store), painters or masking tape, newspaper, chalkboard paint, foam brush, chalk, and ribbon. I have a quart of chalkboard paint that has been lasting forever, but you can also buy chalkboard spray paint which is less expensive.
First, wrap painters tape around the stem of the wine glass and set them on newspaper.

Second, paint a coat of chalkboard paint and let it dry for about 30 minutes before applying another coat. You will need to put around five coats before removing the tape. When removing the tape, go slow and you may need to touch up around the the tape area.

Make sure to rub chalk all over the chalkboard surface. This allows the chalkboard paint to cure to the wine glass surface. Finally , wipe the chalkboard surface off with a damp cloth and you can add a ribbon or charm to accessorize your glass. Make sure on the gift card to the hostess give instructions to hand wash. This is a fabulous, inexpensive and personal hostess gift.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas. My family and I have had a wonderful holiday season. It will continue with more relatives coming to visit. My last holiday outfit was acquired from the thrift store. I absolutely love this dress. Its design is so simple and elegant. I love thrift stores because you never know what kind of treasures you might discover. Lately, I have been going to thrift stores for things like buttons, material, sequins, or anything that can be used for my projects. Every now and then I will discover a great item like this dress. What have you thrifted lately?

A Look for Less - Costume National

I have been enamored by the Costume National 2011 Fall RTW Collection. I love their dress with its color blocking pattern and found two dresses from ASOS with the same fabulous pattern, for a lot less. Both of these dresses are extraordinary, but I think the Colour Block T-Shirt Dress is a great dress for many body types and could easily be paired with a sweater for winter. DIY- Eyeglass case cheetah clutch- Inspiration Rebecca Minkoff

I was reading my November 2011edition of InStyle Magazine and came across this Rebecca Minkoff ' s oversize cheetah hair calf clutch. I kept this for a future DIY. When my mother came over this weekend with this fabulous cheetah coat she had bought from the thrift store, I knew I had the perfect material for this clutch.

Things you will need to complete this project are: cheetah fabric(can be found at a craft store), and large eyeglass case. Eyeglass cases can be found by the masses at thrift stores. Mine is 7 inches by 3 inches. You will also need fabric glue, Amazing GOOP adhesive, paintbrush, scissors, black ribbon, clips, and a heavy object.

First, you will separate the inside from the outside of the eyeglass case. Only lift the edges, not the whole interior.

Second, then use the brush to paint fabric glue between the inside and the outside of the eyeglass case.

Third, push the fabric in between the interior and the exterior of the eyeglass case.

Fourth, paint the fabric glue on the back of the case.

Fifth, cut the excess fabric before following step three for the other side of the eye glass case.

Sixth, use the Goop adhesive between the interior and the exterior of the eye glass case. Just pull the two parts apart, because fabric glue wil lnot fully dried. This allowed me to put two pieces of ribbon on each side in the middle of the case. I cut ribbon pieces to 10 inches. You can trim these later. You will then need to clip the sides for the adhesive to adhere. Let it dry overnight. After removing the clips, you will need to close the case and place something heavy on top of it. I actually put mine under a piece o f furniture. This helps make sure there is no gap when the case is closed.

I couldn't be more pleased with the finished product. I can't wait to use my cheetah clutch. I would love to hear what you think.

These would make great Christmas gifts. Bright colors are going to be a trend we will see this spring. I also think adding bright colors on your wrist this winter will brighten those gloomy days. I purchased the $10.80 enameled set from Forever 21 and can't wait to wear them. Would love to hear what you think of these bracelets.

DIY- Lace Bow As Seen in Lucky Magazine

I absolutely loved this bow, worn by Kirsten Dunst, on the cover of Lucky magazine.

Things you will need to complete this project are craft Glue 600, Elmers's Spray Adhesive, jewelry pin back, black thread, needle, newspaper, scissors, and material. I purchased my material at the thrift store. They were scarves for a total $3.00. You can find black lace and any silk fabric color you choose at your local craft store.

Cut lace into a 11 inch by 10 inch rectangle.

You will need to cut the silk fabric the same width as the lace, but the length should be 5 inches long.

Fold the lace over the silk material and spray together with the Elmer's spray glue on newspaper. Let dry for 30 minutes.

Next, you will need to make the two pieces that hang down from the bow. The lace should be 11 inches long and 4 inches wide. The silk material should be 11 inches long and 2 inches wide. Follow same steps as large rectangle with glue. The last piece needed is a single piece of lace 11 inches by 2 inches. This is used for the middle of the bow, to tie all three pieces together.

To assemble the bow, first pinch at the middle of the rectangle. It will be stiff from the glue, so you can mold it however you want.

Next, fold the two strips over the pinched area. Then tie the single piece of lace in the middle. Make sure to make a knot in the back.

Next, trim the bow. I trimmed all four edges.

You will need to hand sew the openings to give it that finished look.

Last, glue jewelry pin to the bow with craft glue 600. After, lay a telephone book over and let it dry over night.

I pinned the bow to my shirt under my sweater, so I didn't put holes in my sweater. I loved how it turned out. I think it looks great with a long sleeve shirt for winter and short sleeve shirt for summer. I would love to hear what you think. Would you buy something just because it is on sale?

I am the first one to look for a bargain. I love finding deals at thrift stores, garage sales, and retail stores. As a consumer, when I buy something I want to get it for the best price. I find that friends of mine and myself included, when buying something just for the sake of being on sale that item may never be used or worn. I recently was shopping, and noticed a pair of jeans that were on sale. When I tried them on I really wasn’t sure if I liked them. I ask the sales associate what he thought and he said, “ I mean, buy it for the price”. That actually deterred me from buying the item, because I wanted an honest opinion not based on price. When I am buying an item on sale or not, I try not let the price persuade me. I find that when I do, I really don’t use the item and I kind of feel like I settled, instead of getting what I really wanted.

Two tips when buying something onsale:

Make sure that if you buy something on sale, thatit was something you would have bought regardless of the sale price.
Look around the store to see if there is anythingelse you are interested in. Maybe you will decide to put back any sale items and buy the item you are really interested in.

DIY: Making a Fur Peter Pan Collar

It seems like everywhere I look this fall I see fur. I was recently looking on a couple of websites. I saw these Peter Pan fur collars ranging from $20-$35. Quickly, I said, "I can make that!" and off to the craft store I went. This was a pretty feasible project and I loved how it turned out. To complete this project you will need: fur and backing material at least 12 inches by 12 inches, craft glue, No Fray adhesive, stick pins, ribbon( whatever color you choose), paper for a pattern, pencil, scissors, and something heavy.

First, you will have to draw a pattern on paper. This will be used as your template. I tried it on my neck after I cut it out.

Second, as you see, I rounded my edges to make the collar have more of a Peter Pan look, and I also had to fold the back to fit my neck size.

Third, you will need to place the pattern on the fur material. You will need to fasten the material to the pattern so it will not slip as you are cutting.

Fourth, once you have cut out the fur, make sure to try it on your neck before going any further on these directions. If it fits well, then take the material that you chose for the backing and pin it to the pattern. You will use the pattern to cut, instead of pinning it to the fur, so that you can cut as close to make equal sizes of the fur and the backing.

Fifth, you will need to make sure the backing material fits evenly on the back of the fur. If not you can cut accordingly. Then cut the ribbon into two 17 inch pieces.

Sixth, you will glue the backing material to the fur with fabric glue on both insides facing to each backing. You will need to lift the sides up off the backing material and glue 2 1/2 inches of the ribbon between the two fabrics. Then, use the No Fray adhesive on the edges and lay something heavy, like a telephone book, to help the glue adhere to the two fabrics.

This project only took about 30 minutes and the finished product is fabulous. Let me know if you tried the project or just what you think !

Here are a few photos of some of my decorations that I have used to decorate for Christmas this year. Decorating is such a exciting time for me and my family. I love the vintage decorations that I have collected over the years. My finds are from garage sales, thrift stores and vintage shops throughout the year. When I purchase a Christmas decoration I pack it away with the other decorations until Christmas. I still have a child-like feeling when I go to open them during the holidays.
I especially love vintage items because I think they represent traditions and celebrations of the past and creating new ones.
The vintage items I have acquired each have a story of their own. One story that comes to mind, took place at a craft bazar in German Village. A cute elderly women had set up a stand with vintage ornaments. She told me that they had been special ornaments to she and her husband. She had such a kind spirit. I told her I would take good care of them and they would be enjoyed by my family. Another story is of the bubble lights that are in the second photo. The bubbled vintage lights also bring back a childhood memory of just completely staring at them on my best friend's Christmas tree. I loved them so much and wanted them for my own tree as a child, and vowed to someday adorn my tree with them. I love the excitement on the children's faces as they decorate the tree, it really gives me such a warm feeling. Each ornament has a special memory for me. DIY- From Drab to Fab, Making a Glitter Clutch

I bought this burlap clutch at Hobby Lobby for a whopping $3.59 after I used my 40% off coupon. I liked it because it is a great size, 6 in. tall by 12 in. wide. I thought the color was a little boring and the material was flimsy. For about a week, ideas came to me and I decided that I loved glitter and cobalt blue, so I put them together for the clutch.

Supplies needed for this project are: clutch, newspaper, Mod Podge Glue in matte, glitter of your choice, paper plate, foam brush ,and a plastic bag.

I put the bag over the interior because the material that is lined inside is my favorite part.

First, you will mix the glue with the glitter and then tape the snap, so it was free from debris. Then, use the foam brush and paint it on.The trick is it will take around five coats, this process creates a more durable material for the clutch. The glue takes around 20 minutes to dry. I painted the front bottom and the back the silver glitter.

I am loving cobalt blue, and color blocking. So, I decided to use the blue glitter at the top of the clutch. One more supply you will need is packaging tape to keep the blue glitter only at the top. Again, the trick is about 4 to 5 coats.

One of the main reasons I loved this bag was the interior fabric. To ensure no glue gets in the interior, make sure to put a plastic bag inside.

I think the final product turned out fabulous. I can't wait use to use this clutch. Give it a try and let me know how it worked for you.

Can't Get Enough of Madewell

Starting at the top left: Skinny skinny Jeans in Western Wash, below is the Ribbed 1937 Tights. The top is the Stripe-Sleeve Cable crew Sweater in Siberian Red and the Metallic Tap Oxford. The middle two photos are Saint James Aviso Tee and Winter Tale Scarf. Lastly, the two bottom photos display the Spotted Snowfall Sweater and Hunter High-Gloss Wellies.

These are just a few of the items that I fancy from Madewell.com. I know quite a few J. Crew fans. If you fall into this category, I highly suggest you check out Madewell (which by the way is owned by J. Crew). I first discovered Madewell on a trip to Boston with my husband. I was ecstatic when they opened a store in Columbus, Ohio. I love it because it has a slightly retro feel, along with that J. Crew sense of style. DIY Project: Making Rain Boot Cuff Inserts

I bought this jacket at the thrift store for $5.99 for another project I have in the works. I just love this plaid print and thought I could use the jacket sleeves for cute sock inserts for my rain boots. You could make these inserts with any heavy fabric material, so happy hunting at the thrift store or you own closet.

For this project, you will need scissors, iron-on tape, and an iron. When cutting the sleeves, take into account the width and length of your leg that you want to go down into your boot.

Lay the iron on the tape at the top of the sleeve inside out.

Iron and pull the tape off. Then fold the top over about an 1/2 inch and iron.

Then put the insert into your rain boot inside out. Leave 4 to 5 inches at the top, so you can fold over the rain boot.

Final outcome- Rain boots with a fabulous plaid cuff insert. I love to hear what you think!!

The Emergence of "Why Shop When You Can Swap?"

Last summer, I was cleaning out my jewelry box and found great jewelry that I didn't care for anymore. This jewelry I didn't want to sell at my garage sale, and I thought some of my friends would like to have this jewelry. I did some research online and came across information about clothes swap parties. I thought that won't work unless most of your friends are the same size. So, I thought why not an accessory party? I got right on Evite.com and began my invitation entitled, "Why Shop When You Can Swap?" I had each girl bring 5 to 7 items. Accessories that could be included were scarves, shoes,earrings,rings,necklaces, or purses. Everyone brought an appetizer to share, accessories and we had a fabulous time. The items that were left over were donated. I still love the items pictured below. Since then, I have been invited to 4 more swap parties ranging from accessories to household items. I love to see that the idea has caught on. This a great inexpensive way to get rid of your unwanted items and get new treasures.

A Fabulous Way to Recycle Men's Vintage Neckties

I was recently at a party where I admired this girl's scarf made of vintage neckties and asked if I could take a picture. She told me she purchased the scarf at a craft bizarre and also had seen them on Etsy.com. I checked on Etsy and they range from: a 1 tie scarf for $28.00, to a 4 tie scarf for $105.00. Well, that afternoon I headed to the local thrift store to check out the selection of men's vintage ties. I found a few I liked and asked my mom (who will try any project and is very creative) if she could make me a few with the picture I took. I picked them up from her yesterday and after a few alterations the finished product is fabulous.

Expressive Style, A New Beginning....

So, I have many reasons for starting a blog . First, I love blogs because they give me ideas and ways to put outfits together. Second, blogs often suggest clothing items that are often too expensive or not accessible to me here in Columbus, Ohio. Third, many of my friends(sometimes like today), random strangers ask me to help them put outfits together, give my honest opinion on clothing , shoes , etc. So, I thought if I love fashion and love to help people why not start a blog. I will accomplish two things with this blog:

1. I will find fashion trends from famous designers and tell you where you can find similar pieces at an affordable price.

2. I take pictures of my own style and post where the pieces from the outfit can be found.
